The freedom of the American open road has been a powerful image for generations of dreamers, representing for some an ideal of self-discovery, and for some, even a path to redemption. Over the years, the dream of hitting the road has had a profound influence on culture and has always maintained an air of mystery, fuelling the romantic allure of the West. The early American pioneers headed West in search of a better life, the beatniks followed Kerouac to LA and ‘Frisco’, while the hippies searched for freedom from the constraints of the American middle class; but was what lay beyond the desert mirage when the road finally ran out any different to what they left behind in the first place?
